Burnout in High Achieving Women

If you have faced burnout in the past, or if you are currently facing burnout, I highly recommend to keep reading as I will dive into an element of burnout that is not widely spoken about. You will hear about it through a different lens and understand why you might be feeling this way.

An Increasing Rate of Burn Out

Recently, I’m hearing and seeing more with my clients that women are burning out in their careers and businesses very quickly. There is a constant feeling like you need to be showing up all the time, that you need to be visible to make an impact. And that you need to be producing content or always doing something to be productive.

You get to a point where you find you are constantly pushing and you may be looking outside of yourself for answers. This can lead to burnout.

The women I speak to have been in their business for a while or they are building successful careers and they haven’t taken the time for themselves to reconnect to who they are beyond their work.

By constantly doing something that is Involved in their careers or businesses they don’t stop. They are producing content, they are building their team or reaching that next milestone. There is always something that they are doing that is going to move the needle.

They feel like they consistently need to be doing something to progress. The constant need to strive, to reach that next milestone.

I’m going to share something with you that will give you a different perspective, an indication as to why burnout could be happening to you.

Why Burn Out?

Women still experience burnout, even when they are not over working or pushing all the time. And  what it comes down to is not listening to yourself. You have stopped listening and acting on your inner guidance. Your intuitive genius has been silenced.

And instead of doing this, you have given your power away to your external circumstances. So this may be that you are prioritizing things that you need to buy. Or you’re prioritizing things outside of you. Certain goals or milestones for example.

You have found that you have given your power away to these things that make you happy externally, but don’t fill an internal need and can create stress within your body and within your nervous system.

And now the symptoms of burnout are coming through.

When you are successful and you get to a point that you feel like everything is going well,  but you’re still experiencing these signs, ask yourself:

  • Am I really, truly listening to my inner guidance, or am I listening to something that’s coming externally from me?
  • Am I creating and leading from a place of fun and fulfilment, or am I creating from a place of lack?
  • Am I creating and leading from a place of desire?

When you are creating and leading from a place of truly being home within yourself, you most likely won’t be making the wrong decisions.

Burnout can often happen when you’re not meeting yourself where you need to be. Where perhaps you need to ask some questions that you haven’t asked yourself yet.

Mothers face burnout, women face burnout in general.  We have a lot of priorities in our life. We are business women, we are mothers, we are leaders. We have family, business and life commitments.

But with all the priorities that we need to juggle, often our own needs can be put to the side.

This can create burnout.

Listening To Your Inner Guidance

What I see mostly creating burnout more than overworking, more than doing the wrong things is giving your power away to your external circumstances and not listening to your inner guidance. That is one of the biggest things where as women, we are incredibly intuitive beings, this is part of our natural operating system.

And when we ignore this and we try and push in the opposite direction, we are going to face some things that will not bring us  joy, and perhaps bring us pain because we are not listening to what we truly want and need.

We may be ignoring those signs to do something that might feel easier, or our coach has told us to do something. Or perhaps other people in the industry are doing it a specific way. Or perhaps it is what you need to do in order to advance or to progress. However, what your intuition is telling you will be the right thing for you when you match it with the sensations you feel in your body.

Now, this is where I see a lot of a lot of misinformation around intuition that when your intuition tells you that it feels right, it must be right.

When you feel the right sensations in your body, it is not just about listening to your intuition and taking that advice. It is about going back and listening to what is going on within you and in your body and tuning into those sensations. Asking yourself is this making me feel fearful or am I feeling excited?

Making Room for the Magic

If you are not guided by your intuition to live and lead in a way that brings you more peace and joy, your life and career or business will start to feel really hard.  When you are a successful, high achieving woman and things are going really well for you, sometimes you might not have the time to stop and really understand what brings you peace and meaning. Our inner guidance is often silenced so we can make decisions faster.

Let this be your permission slip to stop and reflect. Lock some time in your diary and make it a weekly practice.

Ask yourself, “where can I be shifting things up to bring more of this into my business or career and in my life?”

It will keep feeling really hard until you stop and ask yourself the above questions. Because if you don’t stop and make space for this reflection, you may find yourself circling and finding yourself in the same position in 12 months time.

It can happen when we are too busy doing and not listening. When we are not honouring us, we are not aligning ourselves with what we need. And when we want to create a legacy in our business or career, we need to honour all of us.

We need to honour our desires. We need to honour our body of work. We need to honour all the things that are happening in our life. But most of all, we need to really listen to what is going on within us and create from that space.

Because when we are creating from a place of listening to our external circumstances and letting that run the show,  this will lead us to places that perhaps we don’t want to be led to.

We really need to trust that we’re going to be making these decisions and lead from there.

We hear so much about burnout that people are working too hard. But we can also be not working on the right things or be letting our external circumstances run the show.

Rather, let your inner guidance be the one that serves you and your business and career.
